How to Copy and Edit Protected PDF Files?

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

Great security is one of the reasons why so many people use PDF format. A PDF author can set password to prevent readers from opening it, or set restriction for copying the text or printing the PDF document. They are the “User Password” and “Owner Password”.

But the security also bothers many PDF users. In some situations, we need to copy the text from a PDF, print the PDF out or edit the PDF, legally of course. For example, we need to open or edit an old PDF file but we forget the password. Or the professor allows me to quote the content of his research, but he forgets to remove the restriction. Or the boss needs the report which is created by a former colleague but he is not working for the company anymore. What can we do if we meet the situations above? If we know there are some ways to remove the restrictions of PDF files, we won’t spend money to hire some freelancers to retype the whole PDF files into Word format.

However, we should know that cracking PDF user password is a difficult and time-consuming job. If you really want to do that, some PDF Password Recovery tools are available. The related solution was mentioned in the article “Impossible to Crack Open PDF Password, NO!”

But removing the owner password is much easier. There are two solutions for you to copy or edit a PDF protected by owner password.

(1) Remove restrictions of PDF using Password Remover. You can use a Password Remover to remove restrictions of PDF files. It’s a small program which is extremely easy to use. All you need to do is right-click the PDF file, select “Remove Restrictions” or “Remove Restrictions & Save as. . . ” from the shortcut menu. The owner password will be removed in seconds and then you can edit, print, copy your PDF files as you wish. But it can not remove or find the user password of a PDF.

(2) Convert a protected PDF to Word format using PDF to Word Converter.

There are many PDF to Word converters in the marketplace. The output quality differs from brand to brand, many of them output the Word format which is full of weird text boxes or overlapping text. It’s quite difficult to guarantee the conversion quality, let alone the function of cracking password.

But AnyBizSoft PDF to Word converter can handle both conversion quality and converting protected PDF files pretty well. The original layout, text content, images, and hyperlinks can be retained in the output Word document. The conversion quality is very good.

If the PDF has been set an owner password, just convert it into Word format without any trouble. Follow 3 steps: (1)Add the PDF files(supporting batch and partial conversion), (2)Choose the output folder, (3)Click “Convert”. Then the protected PDF will be converted into Word format in high speed.

If there is a user password and you have it, you can type it in then repeat the 3 steps above. I have tried many PDF to Word converters. They just do not support both types of protected PDF files. Even if you know the user password, you have to remove it manually before conversion, or Error will occur when you try to convert them into Word.

Both solutions are quite easy. Just a few clicks then there won’t be any troubles with protected PDF.
