Bible Thumpers back in the day thought the earth was flat? ?

Monday, September 12th, 2011

The earth is a sphere (Isaiah 40:22). At a time when many thought the earth was flat, the Bible told us that the earth is spherical.

So Did Bible writers believe the earth was flat?

Let us reason together

So Was is true? Is it true? Was there ridicule? Hmmmmm I wonder what Bible believing Scientists thought back then and today about scientific issues? Are there even any Christian Scientists? Science and God conflict?

Would anyone out there like to read and critique my young adult dystopian, Counter?

Sunday, September 11th, 2011

I have a PDF version of the manuscript of my book, Counter. It contains the first five chapters and the epilogue. Most of the mistakes have been weeded out, but there have probably been some that I haven’t caught. I would like for any readers, writers, or editors out there to take a look at my book and give me some constructive criticism about it. It’s about 20,000 words right now, but I am aiming for 90,000. I hope to get it published once I am finished, so any advice you have would be greatly appreciated. Please just send me an e-mail if you would like to read it, and post your critique on here. Thank you!

Here is the basic plot, by the way.

Quinn Williams has spent all 17 years of her life wishing she lived in the Syndicate, a city hidden behind a wall, instead of her village where poverty and starvation are prevalent. At her Calling ceremony, where she will draw a card that tells her what job she will work in the Syndicate (if she even gets to enter at all), she draws the mysterious position of Counter. As she enters the Syndicate and finds out just what it is that a Counter does, she will meet new friends, fall in love, and be forced to make the toughest decision of her life, a decision that will not only forever change the life of herself but the lives of every single member of her village.

Why do white men say that black men can only get fat or unattractive white women.?

Saturday, September 10th, 2011

White men say that black men can only get the fat white woman that white men don’t want. I find this claim funny since white men have been complaining about these relationships since the Ancient days. Plus since black men are supposed to be ugly why can’t fat and unattractive white women just go to fat and unattractive white men. For thousands of years white men have shown their jealousy to wwbm relationships. There is a picture in Medieval France showing a black men and white women and their children in hell http://jmems.dukejournals.org/cgi/pdf_extract/31/1/57. White men have been complaining about wwbm relationships since the days of Rome. The Roman writers Plutarch, Martial, Juvenal, Pliny, Aristotle, Hippocrates(both Greeks) mention the habit of married white women having affairs with black men look at the last paragraph of this clip-http://scholar.lib.vt.edu/ejournals/ElAnt/V1N4/thompson.html . Juvenal warns white men that their wife may be pregnant by black men.

Maternal impression as an excuse.

Black men have even been with Queens and Empresses
Razia sultana a beautiful white women was overthrown for being with a black man

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamal-ud-Din_Yaqut

And still thousands of years later white men are still complaigning about this.

The stereotype of black men only being able to get fat white women comes from black men who who go after fat white women do for their money

Novel/Short Story/Novella writing question?

Friday, September 9th, 2011

I am thinking of the best way to write them. Namely what editor to use. Not so much as editor as what file format. Should I write my short stories/novels inside .doc files…or should I do it in txt files. Since a lot of these I need to be able to take them to “print” at some point (printable) and there might be times when I need to convert them into PDF format. I write a lot..but never really thought about this deeply. What is the best suggestion? Should I write them in .doc files..or should I always write them in txt files? or rtf..or something else?

What do most other writers write them in? I figure in doc or rtf..so you can bold the chapter headers and stuff.

In Buddhism was Devadatta really evil or just unfairly vilified?

Thursday, September 8th, 2011

I read here in this well sourced article about Devadatta. It makes me wonder what is the real truth behind Devadatta? http://www.leighb.com/Devadatta.pdf

I am getting different messages from different people such as my professor and monks whom I have asked about Devadatta.

I want to believe that he is just a victim of the writers of the Pali Canon who did so to prevent further schisms in the Sangha.

Well, what do you make of it?
If you have no idea, don’t bother answering.

Jonathan asked: “What features increase the quality of a Translation?”?

Thursday, September 8th, 2011

His full question a day ago was “What features increase the quality of a Translation? Translation of a book
what increases up the possibility of publishing a translated book/>”

I replied: “I have tried to read multiple translations of Cervantes’ “Don Quixote,” for example, by literary hacks who think the most important element of translation is preciseness, and when they couldn’t find the right word or phrase they just threw up their hands and left the words in the original Spanish (in italics, at least). The same applies to many versions of Dumas’ “The Count of Monte Cristo” and Hugo’s “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” except in French.

“Then at last I found translations of these books that brought them to English life, which is very difficult with “Don Quixote” due to the rhyming, and books I thought I’d never read opened up to me. The key, I realized from my knowledge of French, is the translator knowing the other language as well as his own, as that is the only way to understand the words and terms that don’t translate (idiomatic speech). When you are good enough to know how to translate “merde alors” from French to English (to use a crude and poor example off the top of my head), you’ll understand the language.

“And by the way, my step sister once said, after visiting Paris for an extended trip, that she knew she was becoming fluent when she could eavesdrop.”

Jonathan, maybe because I was the only person to reply, chose my answer Best but rated it one star with a row of question marks below it. If you read this, Jonathan, my question is what didn’t you understand? THE QUALITY OF THE TRANSLATION “INCREASES UP” (REDUNDANT) THE ODDS OF BEING PUBLISHED. I might have added that the higher the translator’s education and more experience he or she has in the field help, given the abundance of professionals in the field, whether they be masterful, mediocre or cretinous.

Also, Jonathan, a legitimate source of quasi-self-publishing that is available to new authors or writers now is the uprise of online publishers that contract to distributors such as Amazon, e.g., CreateSpace [https://www.createspace.com/Login.do;jsessionid=AF07AC62258F3B1258A16C000B845A35.cspworker05]. Unless you opt for one of their special package deals, it costs nothing and you design the book yourself from cover to text-style and content. When your translation is ready, you have to make a PDF to upload to their site (be sure you have established your rights to translate or copyright the work, as the case may be, beforehand). The royalties are much higher than print book publishers because of the low-cost, on-demand nature of e-books.

Has this answered your question better, or anyone else’s?

Do you challenge “The Deliberate Dumbing Down of America,” as portrayed by Charlotte Thomson Iserbyt?

Wednesday, September 7th, 2011

This book is available in PDF from http://www.deliberatedumbingdown.com/ and was written by Charlotte Thomson Iserbyt who served as Senior Policy Advisor in the Office of Educational Research and Improvement (OERI), U.S. Department of Education, during the first Reagan Administration.

The stories I have heard suggest that most teachers who take action regarding the issues she presents often find themselves out of a job. I am connected to several very intelligent writers and we’re interested in supporting a reversal of the trend that Iserbyt has identified. To this end, I am researching how current teachers relate to them.

Fellow authors/journalists, I need your help!!?

Monday, September 5th, 2011

I’m starting a magazine & I need a few creative “Letters to the editor” to have in my first issue…

Since it’s the first issue, I’m expecting questions like “What are you all about?” and stuff like that, so feel free to follow that road or to get creative.

Why am I posting it in this category? OBVIOUSLY because it’s where the writers are (I should know, I spend almost all of my time there)

As for what my magazine’s about… so far I’m not really sure yet… I’m kind of building it one page at a time, but I know I’ll include reviews for books, movies, etc and a “Feature Fiction” or “Feature Fiction” or something like that to post stories… SPEAKING OF WHICH, any stories of 1,000 words or less that you want in my magazine? lol… (Its sort of just for fun, for now, but if it turns out good I might pursue it… as a pdf webzine from my website, lol)

YOU WILL get credit for your submissions!!!

Anyone who wants to help, include a FIRST NAME, LAST INITIAL, city and state (or just state if you’re uncomfortable sharing that) OR city & country if you’re not in the US. :)

Example:
****************************************************
Content, content, blah, blah, blah, etc…
- Max W, Seattle, WA, USA
****************************************************

OR SOMETHING TO THAT EFFECT… :)

Thanks!
Awesome, can you post or email me one? (I have the “accept email” thing on) If you don’t want to its okay, but if you do, you’ll get full credit & even a spot for an illustration or 2… if you don’t have any I can create some based on the story’s content…

OH! & just to put this out there, I’m not going to use everything that I get… So there’s no guarantee that your stuff will “get in” but if it’s good and I don’t get TOO much stuff, there should be plenty of room for it. :)
Wow, buzzer, that was kind of mean… you couldn’t have just said “I don’t think it’s such a good idea to get letters on your first issue”…?

I’m sure its painfully obvious I’ve never started a magazine before, and like I said, its just “for fun” at this point…. I’d probably tweak the **** out of it before actually sending it to the public, so if it turns out really good, I’ll go through self and peer editing and figure out what’s what… if any part sounded “phony” I’d catch it, and if I didn’t, one of my “peer editors” would.
SHEESH! I’m NOT saying I’m starting some “grade-a awesome magazine empire”… I’m saying that I’m starting a pdf-based magazine that I make myself & deliver to people who want it through my website… If it progresses on its own, it will do so, if not, I really don’t care. I’m not paying people because I have no money, and I’m not MAKING any money out of this because it’s not WORTH the money (because I have zero reputation, etc) and the fact that I’m a college student who can barely afford tuition means I WON’T be paying for it any time soon. Thing is, people get “randomly famous” all the time through internet ventures (like Tom from Myspace, not that it relates to my magazine, lol) so my magazine could just “pop” into popularity at some point, if it does then cool, and again, if not, who cares!
“Defensive, naive, and living on cloud 9″??? Just because I’m not “formally starting a business” and blah-blah-blah does NOT mean that I don’t know anything about what I’m doing OR that I have to follow YOUR stupid rules. I’m not trying to start some major corporation, I’m trying to do something fun that’ll be entertaining for some people, and let it take itself from there.

And I can be defensive if I want, kind of like how you’re being a “better than thou” jerk because YOU want.
Wow, kk, don’t call me “little girl”… and just because you’re “experienced” in the industry does NOT make you better than me… I’m an author, does that mean you’re not allowed to post a fan-fic if you feel like it? No. Does it mean I’m going to respond to your question telling you how you’re in over your head and you don’t know what you’re doing and just plain belittle you? No.

I’ll do whatever the **** I want and if someone wants to join in my fun and submit something for it, that’s not YOUR problem, is it?

How many Jews stayed in Judah after the Babylonians conquered it?

Sunday, September 4th, 2011

In 586 BCE the Babylonian king Nebuchanezzar conquered the southern Kingdom of Judah, deposing the king, destroyed the Temple and left Jerusalem in ruins. He took 832 Jews captive from Jerusalem (Jeremiah 52:29). Although ending the kingdom he allowed Judah a measure of self rule, appointing Gedaliah as Jewish governor of the region. Gedaliah was later assassinated by members of the royal family who saw him as a usurper, which resulted in punitive action by Nebuchadnezzar in which a further 745 Jews were exiled to Babylon.

In total 4600 Jews had been exiled to Babylon (Jeremiah 52:30). Even if we accept the theory that only men were counted, the total number of the Judah captives could not be more than 30,000 souls. And what was the population of the Kingdom of Israel and Kingdom of Judah?
Farrell Bloch made a thorough analysis of this question in his article “Are Most Jews B´nei Judah?”( you can read it at jbq.jewishbible.org/assets/Uploads/323/323_AREMOST5.pdf ) . The male population of Judah between 20 and 60 years old before the Babylonian conquest was 127,000. It means that the TOTAL population was at least 800,000 people. 30,000 souls out of a million does not look like a mortal blow, and 770,000 Jews of the Judah Kingdom went on living calmly where they used to live.

The territory changed Master- but the people stayed! Some fled to other countries, some were killed, but the main part of the population both of the Kingdom of Israel and the Kingdom of Judah went on living on the land they had been living on for centuries. Israelis and Jews remained in Israel and Judah. Let´s remember this fact: the words “Jews and Israelis were exiled” meant just a small part of the population: nobility, craftsmen, writers, philosophers…

But the majority stayed where it was.
